by Lance T. Walker

The recent coronavirus outbreak has meant that millions of parents across the globe are now facing the impossible task of being a parent, worker and teacher.

Getting through your day is difficult enough when you’re trying to work from home with the kids. However, when you also have to home school them at the same time, it can prove to be a real nightmare.

If you’re trying to find the right balance in this unprecedented situation, there are some helpful tips you can follow. We’ll look at a few steps you can take to fulfill all three of your new combined roles without losing your mind.

Create and work from a schedule

One thing that’s going to prove invaluable during this time, is creating and maintaining a schedule. Not only for you, but the kids need one too if you have any hope of keeping up with your increased duties.

Homeschool calendar

Start with making the schedule for the kids. You can include educational activities, play time, rest time and mealtimes. Once they know what they are working on and have a schedule to follow, it makes things so much easier for both them and you. Kids will be a lot happier when they’re following a routine amidst the chaos - and so will you.

Make time for physical activity

It can be tough trying to work when the kids are in constant motion with endless bundles of energy. So, why not help them burn off that energy so you can work in peace?

Getting them to partake in physical activity helps to wear them out as well as keep them healthy. So, encourage time running around in the back yard. You could cerate a mini assault course or look online for physical games you could play.

Once they’ve finished their physical activity, they will be more likely to play quietly for a period of time.

Don’t try to actually become a teacher

Now that the kids are out of school, you may feel like you have to become a teacher. You really don’t. It’s not your job to research and familiarize yourself with all the various topics they cover at school.

Home teaching

Instead, focus on foundational activities they can do, such as reading. You can also set up things such as sensory buckets and let them use educational apps.

If the school provided digital work they can follow, make maximum use of that too. And if you look online, you might also find a good quantity of free workbooks they can use.

Bring back your old school memories

Of course, there's no shortage of television and binge movie watching going on right now. But you also have access to a world of great activities that existed before electronic toys became the norm.

Coloring book

First, break out the art materials. Pens, pencils, markers, and paints can awaken creative skills in children that they didn't even know they had. There is even a whole new generation of coloring books available now that will make you reach for the crayons yourself.

Also, now is a great time to acquaint your kids with lots of ways to enjoy their time with no electricity needed. Classic board games like Sorry, Trouble, Connect4, Operation, Scrabble, Battleship, Risk, Stratego and Monopoly can open a whole new world of entertainment for you and them. In fact, there's a whole list of over 70 great board games online for you here.

And for older kids, learning checkers - and then chess - will give you hours of relief while stimulating your kids' thinking abilities at the same time. So will other games like Dominos, Backgammon, Mahjong, Sudoku, Go, and Mancala. They've worked for centuries all over the world - they'll work just as well for you now!

Playing chess

Talk through any issues with your employer

If you are having issues juggling everything, don’t be afraid to talk to your employer. They may give you additional days off so you can get the family used to the new arrangement.

Yes, there will probably be some complaints of boredom and even a bit of resistance to this new way of looking at the world. Remind them that there will be a lot of changes to how we view things, due to this pandemic... and that might not be all bad.

Remember, there are a lot of people going through the same situation as you right now. It’s not easy, but remind yourself that it is only temporary. The above tips will help you to better juggle your new responsibilities for the time being.
