Property Opportunities in the Italian Lakes
By Amiento Grend of Few Italy

The Italian lakes have been popular with travellers, ever since they were considered an essential stop on the Grand Tour of Europe made by young Aristocrats. The area shows a strong influence from Rome, and finally became part of Italy under Unification in 1859, it had formerly been part of the Austro Hungarian Empire.

There are strong transport link with France , Switzerland and Austria and have close proximity to the Italian ski resorts of Bormio and Livigno to the North.

Being situated in the foothills of the Alps to the North winters can be cold, but many Italian come to the Lakes in the summer to escape the stifling heat of the south.

The area is ideal for property investing as it is an all year round resort, sunny in the summer, close proximity to the Alps in the winter, plus within easy driving of Milan and the world famous Opera at Verona. The number of flights to this area, from all over Europe are increasing all the time, which should lead to greater numbers of tourists to the area.

Where to Buy

If you decide to buy in the area, first determine whether you are Buying to Rent, retiring or bringing the family to live. If you plan to rent your budget will determine your best location. The area is served well by hospitals and Schools. Due to the all round nature of the area there is great demand for rental properties.

If you have to earn a living in the area, speaking Italian will help, especially if you want to find work in Milan. Alternatively you could set yourself up as a relocator, provide holiday lettings or run painting or cookery courses.

The market is considered fairly mature, by Italian standards, but there is still demand from Investors who are looking at the lakes rather than the crowded coasts of Spain. As a guide Italian House prices rose 8 ~ 10% in 2003.

A Brief Guide to The Lakes

Lake Idro: It is popular with windsurfers and being the highest of the Lakes, it is used to generate Hydroelectric power.

Lake Garda: This is the largest of the lakes and the most commercially developed. It has steep rugged cliffs at the north end of the lake and softer hills at the south end.

Lake Orta: Sailing regatts are held on the lake each summer.

Lake Como: The lake is formed by three long arms which join at Bellagio. The lake is served by a number of boats, There are many beautiful walks around Como that the visitor can enjoy.

Lake Maggiore: Considered the least spoilt of all the lakes with the Swiss town of Locarno situated at the North end.

Lake Iseo: Popular with sailors, with a Iseo a medieval Village along its shoreline.

Lake Varese: Famous with Artists and painters who much admired the scenery. Objects from prehistoric dwellings have been found on the shoreline.

The lakes of Northern Italy are a beautiful place to live, but the pace of life is fast and cosmopolitan, don't look here if you want a slower pace of life. There are good investments to have but do your homework and look carefully.
