Re-employment and Civilian Life Skills Training

Listen as Rhonda, a job-seeking Army veteran with two Masters degrees, goes from frustrated and discouraged to re-energized and committed in just 15 minutes!

Many of our military veterans have no idea how much the employment model has changed in just the last several years while they’ve been away defending our country.

You’d be amazed how many are still mailing out resumes on beige linen paper, or waiting for a call from an interviewer each time they fill out an online job application. And too often, filling out a LinkedIn profile is seen as a tedious, complicated, unnecessary waste of time.

It’s easy to fall behind these days, when technology is changing at lightning speeds. And often, by the time a veteran realizes just how much the game has changed, their income and family security are in real jeopardy. This can lead to a cycle of financial instability, underemployment, and feelings of failure. We’re determined to help change that.

What is "re-civilianizing?"

Starting on the first day of Basic Training, the services began a six to seven week process designed to turn new members from raw recruits into military professionals. They learned a whole new value system, a different way of looking at the world, and a set of rules to live by. They were then accepted as members of a team, with expectations as well as rewards that were fairly predictable in nature and scope.

But once they decided to re-enter the civilian world, veterans must face a rather unnerving reality; their nonmilitary peers have been practicing how to be civilians for the entire time they’ve been gone. Re-civilianizing is about more than just getting a job. In order to be truly successful, they need to catch up on the other side of their life education.

THE CHALLENGE: The military mindset, by nature, seeks to solve its own problems as well as those of others. When things get tough, the instinct is to hunker down and get tougher. By the time many veterans reach out for help, their resources are exhausted and they have begun to believe that something is wrong with them. That’s why we need your help. As a sponsor, you can make these resources and information available to a deserving veteran who desperately needs them, but cannot afford them at this crucial moment in their lives.

It’s not the military’s job to re-civilianize veterans. That’s not what we pay them for: and even if they wanted to, they simply don’t have the know-how, or the budget to do so. The TAP (Transition Assistance Program) is designed to give them a little help getting their first job, but after that they’re on their own.

Civilians may have the best of intentions, but they have no way of knowing what the service member has actually accomplished, or who exactly they’ve become as a result of the Basic Training experience – which is actually the root of their re-adjustment difficulties.

The only people who can truly help veterans effectively make the full transition to a civilian lifestyle are veterans who have successfully done it themselves. For various reasons, those teachers and mentors have been in very short supply – until now.

Through a special arrangement with a national career coaching firm, the We Hire Heroes™ team has created a uniquely powerful program that will provide 100 transitioning veterans with a high level re-employment and civilian life skills training program this year as a test group.

This is a no-nonsense, intensive eight week, home study system in video and teleconferencing format. There is no travel involved.

This course goes far beyond any Transitional Assistance Program training currently available. It is, quite literally, a virtual “Civilian Boot Camp™” for military personnel who are returning to civilian life.
